Description
For your bidding consideration here are 10 EXTREMELY RARE VOLUMES of Mr. HEZEKIAH NILES famed publication - the WEEKLY REGISTER! All volumes in ORIGINAL LEATHER COVER and in extremely good condition. Stated on each title page:"The WEEKLY REGISTER: Political, Historical, Geographical, Scientifical, Astronomical, Statistical and Biographical DOCUMENTS, ESSAYS AND FACTS; Together with NOTICES OF THE ARTS AND MANUFACTURERS, AND A RECORD OF THE EVENTS OF THE TIMES."The set includes Volumes 1-4 & Volumes 6-11. The date range covered by these publications is September 7, 1811 thru February 22, 1817 (excluding those dates covered by Volume 5 which is absent). All volumes are FIRST EDITION (no publish dates) with the exception of Volume 1 which is a 3rd Edition printing done in 1816.Franklin Press is the Publisher. Each Volume is a compilation of the weekly Newspaper Publications put out by Mr. Niles from his Baltimore office. As mentioned above, he provided dramatic insight into all areas of interest with a heavy dose of Politics, War & Military Related activity, Slave and Manufacturing Statistics and a significant collection of copies of letters from most of our Countries Founding Fathers including GEORGE WASHINGTON, THOMAS JEFFERSON, JAMES MADISON, JAMES MONROE AND MANY OTHERS. Along the way, he interjects key interest stories and oddities such as an eye witness account by a U.S. Ship Commander running down an unknown vessel only to pull up alongside and get blasted with cannonry, an eyewitness account of a Tornado (Water Spout) which to that point was relatively unknown, and very interestingly, an AD IN THE PAPER FOR BIDS AND QUOTES FOR THE BUILDING OF THE GEORGE WASHINGTON MONUMENT (Cash award of $500 for the successful bidder!). Hundreds and hundreds more such observations and reports.Niles offered in his Weekly publication columns covering such CURRENT EVENTS as "Events of War", "Naval News", "Militia News", "Congressional or Legislative News", "Manufacturing )Exports & Import Statistics), "Indian Affairs", "American Prizes (Enemy Vessels captured at Sea)", "Letters", "Speeches", "Agriculture" and just about every other aspect of life. The topics covered are a phenomenal array of aspect of what we today consider some of our greatest historical footnotes, citizens and accomplishments. A sampling of Articles Covered: "Memoir of Colonel DANIEL BOONE", JAMES MADISON OATH OF OFFICE SPEECH, Prisoner Massacres, U.S. Military & Politician Salaries (Andrew Jackson as Major General in the Armed Forces made $200.00 / week, James Madison as President made $25,000.00 / year), "WHITE SLAVES IN AFRICA",a comparison of the DECLARATION ON INDEPENDENCE as it was ratified and that which THOMAS JEFFERSON initially wrote, NAPOLEON BONAPARTE INVASIONS, the "DECLARATION OF WAR BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND UNITED KINGDOM by President Madison", "INDIAN WARS & BATTLES", an Article regarding "REPORT OF THE SELECT COMMITTEE TO ENQUIRE INTO THE EXPEDIENCY OF ALTERING THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES" to accommodate the growing number of states (absolutely fascinating reading about the thinking and decisions of the Flag design that still stand today), and thousands more articles!!!!!!With over 5000 pages to choose from it was difficult to select only 12 photos for the listing. I have tried to have a sampling of photos that show a broad selction of topics as weel as sections of the books and condition both inside and out.STATEMENT OF CONDITION: To begin with, these books are a RARITY in that they are still housed in the ORIGINAL LEATHER COVERS. Finding one other on teh internet in Leather binding is tough let alon 10 of the first 11 Volumes. The red TITLE LABELS are in very nice condition and still present on each Volume. The GILT LETTERIN, NUMBERS and ORNAMENTATION is stilll very nice on all Volumes. The Leather Cover has expected rubbing, scuffing and markings you would expect. The Spine on acouple of the Volumes has some limited leather loss at upper or lower edges but overall most are very nice. The pages, again as aspected and is normal due to the type of paper used in production,, show scattered tanning and foxing. Some pages show heavy foxing, most are either very light or no foxing. Some water (?) staining, no mold or mildew or smoke odors. A feint musty smell that comes with being 200 years old. WEEKLY VOLUMES: All weekly Volumes are present and complete, including a TOTAL OF 259 VOLUMES AND 28 SUPPLEMENT! PAGE CONDITION: Important to note that there are NO MISSING PAGES. I personally looked at every page and only found the following items not already covered worthy of note: - VOLUME 1: Previous Owner Bookplate on inside cover- VOLUME 2: Nothing to note- VOLUME 3: @ .5" Pen Mark "X" on page 45, @ .25" hole on page 462- VOLUME 4: Previous Owner Signature (beautiful, old script style) twice on inside Cover and a few other places in book, small tear on INdex Page, @ 1" hole on blank page at back of book (after the last page 432).- VOLUME 6: Nothing to Note- VOLUME 7: Previous Owners name on Title Page- VOLUME 8: Previous Owners name on inside back cover in Pencil- VOLUME 9: Nothing to Note- VOLUME 10: Pencil marks on inside cover page- VOLUME 11: Nothing to NoteI may have missed a few details here and there over the course of the 5,000 pages but overall have describe these books and conditions as accurately as possible given their size and scope.
