Description
The Newe Testament of our Lord Iesus Christ (Royal Quarto) Translated out of the Greek by Theodore Beza and Englished by L. Tomson Imprinted at London 1583 (title pages reads 1582) This copy is the first edition of the single column New Testament in Black Letter. The volume is complete except for the title page which was is from the 1582 Geneva, printed also by Christopher Barker. The bible is bound with The Whole Booke of Psalms 1583 which was printed separately but bound together in the present copy. The text block is very clean with minimal foxing. The margins are also notable as they have not been severely cropped. The final two leaves are inscribed with a short history of the Hilliard family, citing the death and birth of Edward, Mary, Elizabeth and George Hilliard written in an early informal hand ca. 1780's The book was recently bound in brown calf and tooled in blind replicating an earlier style. There are 5 bosses on each cover making a total of ten. The bosses are mid-16th century English and were reclaimed from a previous volume. The bosses are solid brass and have a dark patina from age. The volume has hand sewn headbands and raised bands on the spine. A NOTE ABOUT THE BINDER. The binding was executed by Sean E. Richards restoration binder and conservator who studied under Jan Sobota in the Czech Republic. His work is represented in private and public collections in Europe and the United States. Most notably known for his work on the Galileo collection at the University of Oklahoma's History of Science Collection where he restored many of Galileo's personal copies.
