First edition in Spanish,more sought than the first Italian edition (1780) for its excellent iconography. Francisco Xavier Clavijero, Veracruz, 1731-Bologne, 1787, entered the Society of Jesus in 1748 and was a renowned profesor of philosophy in the Jesuit colleges of México, Puebla, Morelia, and Guadalajara. Exiled on the expulsión of the Jesuits in 1767, he took up residence in Bologne where he wrote the Storia Antica del Messico, published in Cesena in 1780, and the Storia della California published in Venice in 1789. Clavijero´s work reflects great erudition and extensive historical research, and the Historia Antigua is considered a classic synthesis of pre-Cortesian culture in central Mexico.
