Thick 8vo, publisher's original forest green cloth, highly decorated with pictorial embellishments and printing in black and gilt on the covers and spine. xiii, 303. A very handsome, very bright copy in unusually nice condition. Unrestored and without sophistication of any sort, highly unusual thus. A RARE FIRST EDITION, COMPLETELY UNRESTORED AND UNUSUALLY WELL PRESERVED of perhaps the most famous of all Jules Verne novels. Smith & Co. imprint, title page dated 1873, printed lacking The End type on pg 303. The second (preferred) Smith issue - according to Myers, copies with 'THE END' on final page of text have damaged type. Number of Volumes: 1 volume complete. Binding: Original cloth binding, in much better (Very Good) condition than usually found! Front board illustrated in gilt, with an image of Captain Nemo using a sextant. Spine also decorated in gilt. There is light to moderate shelf wear to the extremities~ very tiny chips to the cloth at the crown and bottom of the spine, what appears to be a small, closed & repaired tear to the cloth at top of front hinge. Some signatures shaken but still firmly attached.  Interior rear paper gutter barely started~ cloth not at all.  Front hinge is tight and intact.  2 pages with faint dog-eared corner, faint moisture stain at inner bottom of pages 269-303, barely touching the text on a few pages. Text is much brighter and cleaner than usually found as well. Volume Size: Volume measures 8 1/4 inches tall, and 6 inches wide! TEG (top edges of pages gilded): No Foxing~ Is Text Clean?:Text is generally clean and quite white~ nearly WITHOUT Foxing! Light foxing to frontis tissue guard, rear endpapers, & last couple of pages of text ONLY. Endpapers:Non-decorative. WITHOUT any previous owner's Ex Libris plates and/or signatures! Number of Pages in Volume, or Average Page Count Per Volume: Volume is complete in 303. Additional Notes:Rare First Edition in better condition than usually found!
