Description
This book of Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling has been in my family for 3 generations .It has been read and loved and read to all the children and by all the children of the family since it was first given as a gift in 1902.Passed down like an heirloom for all to enjoy, its time for it to find a proper rest home ,to be cared for and looked after.        During my Mothers final days, she asked me a question that I could not answer .She looked at me and said "I wonder where the Kipling book is?" She passed on shortly after , which made it necessary to go through all her items and there it was.    I remember as a child when she read these amazing stories , she would point out the notes that are written on the pages and I asked her why someone would do that..........of course she would NEVER allow ME to write in a book! I am including a little family history to give you an idea of the books background. From J.M. and Mary to their daughter Helen to her son Howard who was my Father. Mrs. Mary Beecher Longyear was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1851, the daughter of Samuel MARY BEECHER LONGYEARby Max Bohm© Longyear Museum Peck and Caroline (Walker) Beecher. Her father was a member of the well-known Beecher family of New England. After attending various academies and Albion College in Michigan, she became a school teacher. She married John Munro Longyear in 1879. J.M. Longyear discovered vast mineral wealth in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, becoming a large holder of properties which played a vital part in the development of the northwest. Mrs. Longyear was an earnest Bible student from her early years. Shortly after she was introduced to Christian Science, she and Mr. Longyear became dedicated students of Christian Science. J.M. LONGYEARby Max Bohm© Longyear Museum In 1901 the Longyears moved to the Boston area, and Mrs. Longyear developed a warm friendship with Mary Baker Eddy, Discoverer of Christian Science and Founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist. Mrs. Longyear was very helpful to Mrs. Eddy and the early Christian Science church in providing the funds to purchase land for the church and for the Christian Science Benevolent Association in Chestnut Hill. Mrs. Longyear passed on in 1931 and left her home and collection to her foundation, the Longyear Foundation, to be administered by a board of trustees. Mary and John Longyear had six children. One of which was Helen Longyear Paul (1885-1960), historian and writer.( my grandmother) This book was given to her as a Christmas gift from her Father,JM Longyear. John Longyear's UP land turned out to be rich in iron ore. He became a mine owner, bank director, lumber baron and mayor of Marquette. He would head an international mining and logging conglomerate. With their new wealth (estimated at $15 million at one time), the Longyears built a 65-room house from native red and brown stone on a bluff overlooking Lake Superior and the Marquette harbor. The home was landscaped by famous architect Frederick Law Olmsted and completed in 1892. In 1902, the Longyears decided to literally move their huge mansion to Brookline, Mass., so that Mary Longyear could be near her friend Mary Baker Eddy, According to a famous "Ripley's Believe It or Not" newspaper column, the Longyear house in Marquette was taken apart, numbered stone by stone, and moved the 1,300 miles by train in 172 freight and flat cars. The Longyears then added some 20 rooms to the original house. John Longyear died in 1922. His books, maps and manuscripts became the nucleus of the Longyear Research Library, part of the Marquette County History Museum. The library has more than 15,000 titles and specializes in history of the Lake Superior region. Mary Longyear was an international traveler and collector. Newspaper articles indicate she also was a frequent visitor to Battle Creek. She died in 1931. Until 1998, the Longyear mansion in Brookline was home to a foundation and museum dedicated to Christian Science history. The mansion is now part of a high-end luxury condominium project. Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling. New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1902. Original decorated cloth(spine perished) First American Edition. Annotated by Kipling. On page 196, facing" The Cat That Walked By Himself"which opens with an illustration of a bone decorated with runes, Kipling writes"I Rudyard Kipling drew this, but as there was no mutton bone in the house I faked the anatomy from memory. RK." Beneath the inscription is pasted a photograph of what appears to be a campsite. Kipling writes extensively in the margins of page 140, facing the illustration of the Taffimai Metallumai carved on a tusk:This is the story of Taffimai all ritten out on an old tusk.If you begin at the top left hand corneran go on to the rightu can see for urself the things as tha happened . The reason that I spell so puerli is because there are not enough letters in the runic alphabet for all the ourds that I ouant to use to u,o Belofed. /Translation of Runic Magic/Oct.20/ This is the identical tusk on which the tale of Taffimai was ritten and etched by the author." I believe this book to be one of those rare finds that comes once in a lifetime. My sister and I have fond memories of Mother reading us all the Kipling books as children but this one is most remembered. ( The Elephants Child has always been my favorite) Thank you for your interest in this auction and please feel free to ask questions.Shipping in the US for this is 4.00 and  appropriate insurance is to be added .International bidders please inquire about shipping fees.
