Description
lbluestem Store A set of four Presentation Copies, each bound in the original full tan calf by Methuen. In 1927 and 1928 Methuen issued the Pooh books in these newly designed leather bindings: they were presentation copies for Milne issued by Methuen at the completion of the sets in firsts. I have been informed that they are limited copies outside the agreements of cover design designated by the artists initials, copies essentially designed for the artist. Usually referred to as "Publishers Presentation Copies," they were produced by Methuen in full tan calf with Milne's initials stamped in gilt to the front. They are in some ways comparable to the deluxe leather edition Metuen issued, though scarcer. This set includes a first edition (thus) of Winnie The Pooh, a first edition (thus) of The House at Pooh Corner, a second edition (thus) of When We Were Very Young, and a first edition (thus) of Now We Are Six. Each volume contains the original sheets and endpapers printed for Methuen by Jarrold & Sons, now bound in the special publisher's leather presentation binding. Gilt tooling to the front, an elaborate gilt design to the spine, gilt titling to spine, "AAM" in gilt to front, and all edges gilt. Scarce volumes, produced in limited numbers. The books: 1) A. A. Milne. When We Were Very Young. Methuen. 1929. Eighteenth Edition [stated]. [Second printing thus.] Illustrated by E. H. Shepard. Bound in publisher's full tan calf. All edges gilt. Elaborate gilt pictorial design on spine, decorative stamped design with "AAM" in the center. This copy would be a eighteenth printing of When We Were Very Young and the second printing bound in this manner. Tan leather has good color with no fading to front or spine. Gilt bright. Touch of rubbing wear at corners and backstrip edge. Spine bottom shows minor loss. See image. Name to top of front endpaper pastedown. Appears unread. Still very tight. Interior near fine or better. Very attractive copy of very scarce issue.2) A. A. Milne. Now We Are Six. Methuen. 1927. Fourth Edition [stated]. [First Edition thus.] Illustrated by E. H. Shepard. Bound in publisher's full tan calf. All edges gilt. Elaborate gilt pictorial design on spine, decorative stamped design with "AAM" in the center. This copy would be a fourth printing of Now We Are Six and the first printing bound in this manner. Tan leather has good color with no fading to front or spine. Gilt bright. Touch of rubbing wear at corners. And spine top and bottom. Small rubbing loss to spine top at front edge. See image. Name to top of free front endpaper. Appears unread. Still very tight. Interior near fine or better. Very attractive copy of very scarce issue. 3) A. A. Milne. The House At Pooh Corner. Methuen. 1929. Third Edition [stated]. [First Edition thus.] Illustrated by E. H. Shepard. Bound in publisher's full tan calf. All edges gilt. Elaborate gilt pictorial design on spine, decorative stamped design with "AAM" in the center. This copy would be a third printing of The House At Pooh Corner and the first printing bound in this manner.Tan leather has good color with no fading to front or spine. Gilt bright. Touch of rubbing wear at corners. And spine top and bottom. See image. Name to top of verso of free front endpaper. Appears unread. Still very tight. Interior near fine or better. Very attractive copy of very scarce issue. 4) A. A. Milne. Winnie The Pooh. Methuen. 1928. Sixth Edition [stated]. [First Edition thus.] Illustrated by E. H. Shepard. Bound in publisher's full tan calf. All edges gilt. Elaborate gilt pictorial design on spine, decorative stamped design with "AAM" in the center. This copy would be a sixth printing of Winnie The Pooh and the first printing bound in this manner.Tan leather has good color with no fading to front or spine. Gilt bright. Rubbing wear at corners and top edge. And spine top and bottom. See image. Name to top of flyleaf. Appears unread. Still very tight. Interior near fine or better. Very attractive copy of very scarce issue. An exceptional set. The interior of each volume could be rated fine. The exteriors, which are fragile (due to the thin leather bindings) are in much better condition than usually found. They are very attractive and the rubbing loss is very good for these leather issues. Scarce volumes rarely found in this condition. If you require additional images, please contact me.
