New Arrivals All Auctions Rare Book Auctions Original Poster Auctions Title: 2001: A Space Odyssey. Author: CLARKE, Arthur C. New York: New American Library (NAL), 1968. First edition, Octavo, Hardcover, boards in dust jacket. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Developed concurrently with Stanley Kubrick as both a novel and a film, "2001: A Space Odyssey" is both a commentary on the pros and cons of technological advancement and an expose on evolution, religion (does God exist or are we humans in control of our own destiny?), and space exploration (are we or are we not alone in the universe?). It is the work that came to define Clarke, both as a writer and a scientist. "2001: A Space Odyssey" showcased his uncanny ability to leverage his extensive knowledge of space exploration with his expert ability to craft a novel. It laid the ground work for what exceptional science fiction could address. In 1964, Stanley Kubrick contacted Arthur C. Clarke with the idea of collaborating on a film based on Clarke's 1948 short story "The Sentinel." Clarke agreed to write a screenplay but soon grew bored, so Kubrick stepped in to collaborate, while the author simultaneously penned a novel. Intending to publish it before the film was released, Clarke was irritated by the label of "novelization" when his literary work hit the street after the cinematic version reached the screen. While the film, which offers no explanations for events, often makes little conventional sense, the novel features Clarke's thorough cause-and-effect approach. Released simultaneously with Kubrick's 1968 science fiction classic, the standard by which all science fiction films have since been judged. Academy Award winner for Best Special Visual Effects and nominated for three others, including Best Director (Kubrick), Best Screenplay (Kubrick and Clarke) and Best Art Direction. Both novel and film continue to stand as cultural touchstones. First state dust jacket with price of $4.95 and NAL printed in red at the foot of the spine. Black cloth over blue boards with silver and blue spine lettering and brightly illustrated endpapers. A pristine, unread copy of a very uncommon first edition.
