Description
The second James Bond novel, published in 1954. Beautiful, fortune-telling Solitaire is the prisoner of Mr. Big - master of fear, artist in crime, and Voodoo Baron of Death. James Bond has no time for superstition - he knows that Big is also a top SMERSH operative and threat. After tracking him through the jazz joints of Harlem to the Everglades and on the Caribbean, 007 has realized that Mr. Big is one of the most dangerous men that he has ever faced.   The FIRST EDITION of IAN FLEMING'S LIVE AND LET DIE Published on 5th April in 1954.   This book is very rare, the second ever Bond novel. Only a few thousand were published, which over half went straight to public libraries. It commands a high price at auction and is second only to Casino Royale which sells for around £25,000 in its original form. A very rare book and keen collectors will know that just to see this for sale is a very rare opportunity. the BOOK Is beautiful, Not an ex library or book club edition, nor is it a later impression, its an original from the very first printing, a true first edition. You can feel its barely read, if at all and is without inscriptions, scribbles or bookseller evidence. The corners and the spine are in extremely good order although the gilt has slight fading which is completely normal for this book. The front board is very slightly bowed and their is slight staining to the insides of both boards. The contemporary photographs are an accurate record of the book's condition including the minor crumpling and a miniscule and closed tear to one page. Overall this is really nice and clean and you will be very happy when you see it. The verso page states FIRST PRINTED 1954 - exactly what it should if its a first edition. the DUST JACKET Designed by Ian Fleming and executed by Kenneth Lewis. As serious collectors will know, this is where the real value of this book lies. Very limited quantities of these books remain, and only a small percentage will retain their original dust jackets. It is NOT price-clipped, clearly showing 10s.6d.net as called for. The photographs show that it carries some wear which is not inconsistent with its age and is very typical for this jacket. There were three designs of the First Edition Jacket; this one, carries the 2 line design credit immediately below the text description on the front flap. If you have a look at this Live and Let Die that sold on ebay - Item # 320315801961 You will see that it sold for more than my starting price and is much inferior to what I am offering because the dust jacket was from a later impression and therefore nowhere near as desirable.
