Description
Olympia Brown's Bible used in during her life in Racine Wisconsin, possible before. Came from a Racine Wisconsin area estate but only recently discovered. Signed on the first inside page by Mrs. O. Brown. Born in 1835, Olympia Brown graduated college, one of only a few women to do so in her time, in 1860. She attended theological school after hearing Antoinette Brown (not related) and eventually was called to her first full time parish at Weymouth Landing, Massachusetts in 1864. This Bible would have been new that year. She worked with Susan B Anthony, Lucy Stone and other women's rights movement leaders. After hard work in Kansas to pass a women's suffrage amendment, she took on another challenge in 1870 and accepted a call to the Universalist Church in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In 1873 she married John Henry Willis but kept here maiden name explaining her signature as Mrs O. Brown in the Bible. Late 1874 she resigned her ministry only to later take on a calling in Racine Wisconsin. She moved there with her 2 small children and husband. John Willis closed his business in Bridgeport and became one of the owners of the Racine Times-Call newspaper. Her accomplishments in Wisconsin are well known. She died in October of 1926.
