M. Ashe Wallace Morgan The best editon of his works, published in the year of his death, with first edition material in the final three volumes Original Fine Binding Edition that is in STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL CONDITION A remarkably well-preserved set that will meet the standards of the most discriminating collector of rare finely bound books -- an absolute delight. Leather is not deteriorated and retains a new look. Very few leather flaws -- a few tiny rubs and several small corner point damages, the worst of which I show in the photo. Gilt decorations are flawless and retain original brightness everywhere, including the fine diagonal lines on the boards. Edgewear is virtually non-existent. Cloth cover panels are similarly well-preserved with few signs of handling, although there are two adjacent volumes with white spotting as shown. Gilt page tops are also well-preserved across the set, although one volume has a dulled area. Bindings are all as solid and tight as can be -- they retain new book crispness. Insides are very clean without any staining or foxing whatsoever. Bookseller notations in pencil on initial page of all volumes and a small light pencil "12" on all title pages. These volumes are not uncut, but there are a few pages here and there that were and two were opened roughly by a previous reader with some tearing. All illustration plates are flawless. All tissue guards are flawless, save for one with a short corner fold. This set includes the following books: 1) Van Bibber and Other Stories 2) The Exiles and Other Stories 3) Gallegher and Other Stories 4) Soldier of Fortune 5) Captain Macklin 6) Ransom's Folly 7) White Mice 8) The Scarlet Car 9) The Bar Sinister 10) The Man Who Could Not Lose 11) The Red Cross Girl 12) The Lost Road Richard Harding Davis (1864-1916) was the foremost and most popular American reporter of the late 19th century and paved the way for the modern profession of Journalism, achieving fame for his reports on Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders in Cuba and his dispatches from the Spanish-American War, the Second Boer War in South Africa, and the Salonika Front of World War I. He was a managing editor of Harper's Weekly and also worked as a reporter for the New York Herald, The Times, and Scribner's Magazine. He was equally successful as a novelist and short story writer, his most famous being the story "Gallegher," first published in Scribner's Magazine in 1890, and republished here in Volume III. A successful playwright as well, at one point he had three plays running simultaneously on Broadway. Much of his work was illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson, one of the foremost illustrators of the turn-of-the-century, and creator of the famous "Gibson Girl." It is interesting to note that Davis was also celebrated for his good looks and manly elegance, so much so that Gibson used him as a model for his "Gibson Man" illustrations, the male equivalent of his famous Gibson Girl -- two of the illustrations in this set are signed by Gibson who, being a friend of the author, also contributed an appreciation introduction in one of the volumes. Other of Davis' famous friends also contribute reminiscence and appreciation pieces written upon his recent death and especially for this edition, including Theodore Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Booth Tarkington, Gouverneur Morris, Leonard Wood, John T. McCutcheon, E.L. Burlingame, Augustus Thomas, Irvin S. Cobb, John Fox, Jr. and Finley Peter Dunne. Additional works by Richard H. Davis: The West From A Car Window (1892) Exiles and other stories (1894) Three Gringos in Venezuela (1896) Soldiers of Fortune (1897) Cuba in War Time (1897) Dr. Jameson's Radiers vs. The Johannesburg Reformers (1897) The Cuban & Porto Rican campaigns (1899) Cinderella and other stories (1899) Gallegher and other stories (1899) The Lion and the Unicorn (1899) With Both Armies (1902) Ranson's Folly (1902) The Bar Sinister (1903) Real Soldiers of Fortune (1906) (an early biography of Sir Winston Churchill, Major Frederick Russell Burnham, D.S.O., General Henry Douglas McIver, James Harden-Hickey, Captain Philo McGiffen and William Walker) The Congo and Coasts of Africa (1907) Notes of a War Correspondent (1910) Vera, the Medium (1910) Peace Manoeuvres; a play in one act (1914) With the French in France and Salonika (1916) Buyer pays $70.00 for USPS Registered & Insured shipping within the continental United States.
