Description
AUTHOR: Eliot, T.S. (Thomas Stearns), 1888-1965 TITLE: The Waste Land PUBLISHER: Boni and Liveright, New York DATE: 1922 DESCRIPTION: ELIOT, T. S., New York; Boni and Liveright, (1922), First edition, second impression, black cloth boards lettered in gilt. No. 186 of 1,000 copies. (number stamping is not clear on 2nd and 3rd numerals), Although called 'Second Edition' in the colophon, this is actually a second impression from the same setting of type as the first printing. In December 1922, The Waste land was published in the U. S. in book form by Boni and Liverright. The first publication to print T. S. Eliot's notes. In this copy, the "a" is not printed in the word "mountain" in the seventh line on page 41. During the printing of the sheet containing page 41, the letter worked loose, so that the copies were printed with the "a" correctly placed, out-of-alignment, or missing. Since the sheets were selected for binding at random, the presence or absence of the "a" is not indicative of the precedence of printing of a particular copy, but only of the place in the press-run of the sheet on which that page was printed. This copy is dated 1922, some or most of the second impression is dated and printed in early 1923. The Waste Land (1922) is a highly influential 434-line modernist poem by T. S. Eliot. Despite the alleged obscurity of the poem – its shifts between satire and prophecy, its abrupt and unannounced changes of speaker, location and time, its elegiac but intimidating summoning up of a vast and dissonant range of cultures and literatures – the poem has nonetheless become a familiar touchstone of modern literature. Among its famous phrases are "April is the cruellest month" (its first line); "I will show you fear in a handful of dust"; and the Sanskrit "Shantih shantih shantih" (its last line). Wikipedia.org The winner of a Nobel Prize for Literature. The Waste Land may always be known and celebrated as the supreme achievement of 20th century poetry. CONDITION: Very good condition. All edges untrimmed, corners not bumped. Light soiling on front and back cover. Light wear to gilt publisher's name at lower spine. Former owner's signature in ink with 1923 date on inside front cover. Also a pencil note stating, "See if you can figure this one out Marvin E Ballen Mother". Horizontal closed tear across page 37, mended. A very nice copy of Eliot's epic poem.
