New Arrivals All Auctions Rare Book Auctions Original Poster Auctions Title: In Cold Blood (Signed). Author: CAPOTE, Truman. New York: Random House, 1965. First edition, Octavo, Hardcover, boards & cloth in dust jacket. A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. While others may have merely dabbled in the genre, Truman Capote set out to write an instruction manual on how to craft the 'nonfiction novel' with "In Cold Blood." "True crime or nonfiction novel - no matter what the genre, the hotly contested work originally broke ground when published in four installments in "The New Yorker Magazine" ("In Cold Blood: A True Account of a Multiple Murder and its Consequences") in the fall of 1965 and was immediately repackaged by Random House as the "nonfiction novel' "In Cold Blood." Debate ensued over which genre the novel best fit rather than spurring commentary on the horrifying voyeuristic account of the Clutter family murders, including the subsequent trial and execution of their murderers. Written with the assistance of his childhood friend, Harper Lee (of legendary "To Kill a Mockingbird" fame), Capote and Lee traveled to Holcomb, Kansas to interview local residents and talk with investigators. Debate continues today as to the validity of nonfiction told through a narrator's voice. The novel also set a new trend in journalism for print and television, and still used today as a basis for teaching journalism in universities across the country. Quickly made into the 1967 film of the same name starring Robert Blake (Perry Smith) and Scott Wilson (Richard Hickcock) as the murderous duo, it received four Academy Award nominations (Best Director, Best Original Music Score, Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay). It was also adapted for a television mini-series in 1996 starring Anthony Edwards and Eric Roberts, and was the principal subject of the 2005 film "Capote," starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. SIGNED by Capote on the front flyleaf. Dust jacket is lightly toned at the spine panel and extremities, with minute nicking to corners, else a very lovely copy. Not to be confused with the more common edition that is signed on a tipped-in page.
