A handwritten title in black ink as well as beautiful hand-drawn floral ornaments decorate the spine.The binding is rubbed and bumped. Paper with occasional foxing. Some leaves fortified. As the initials were coloured by hand, some leaves with faint colour stains. Lacking last quire V (8 leaves). On the whole this is a nicely preserved incunabulum. Especially the coloured woodcut and intials are in beautiful condition. Price references:This French incunabula edition of Virgil’s works is extremely rare. There are no other offers on the international antiquarian market. Description, contents and further information: A beautiful collection of Virgil’s works including the 5 most important commentaries of the Middle Ages by Servius, Landino, Donatus, Calderinus and Macinelli. An impressive, partly coloured woodcut (6.3 x 7.5 inches) can be found at the beginning of the incunabulum. It shows the five commentators working at their desks in a grand hall. The scholars are arranged in the order of their importance with Servius pictured at the top and Mancinelli and Calderini placed in the lower corners of the woodcut. Furthermore, countless woodcut initials (6–9 lines) decorate the text. They are beautifully designed with floral and ornamental decorations and were also partly coloured. The text itself was artistically set on 62 lines with the commentary framing Virgil’s work. A bookplate by E. de Payan-Domulin was affixed to the inner front cover. Payan-Dumoulin was a distinguished French archeologist and president of the Tribunal du Puy. The publisher Jacobus Sacon used the Venetian Virgil editions by de Zanis (1493, 1494, 1495) as a template. They are, indeed, very similar in terms of content and design. The misleading sentence "Venetiis caractere" in the colophone (missing in this edition) deceived even such distinguished bibliographers as Copinger. However, the incunable at hand belongs to the first prints ever made by the famous publisher Jacobus Sancon from Lyon. Especially the grand woodcut title at the beginning of the volume distinguishes this work from the Venetian incunabula, which were not illustrated. The authors shown on the woodcut, whose extensive commentaries are included in the volume at hand, belong to the most important of Virgil’s critics during the Middle Ages. Maurus Servius Honoratius (5th century CE) and Aelius Donatus (c. 320-380) are the classic Roman commentators. Their work includes important biographical information on Virgil and references to lost works, whose content would be unknown without them. It is especially their notes on Roman history, religion and language which make Servius and Donatus commentary a vital source in understanding Virgil. Antonio Macinelli (1451-1505), Christoforo Landino (1424-1498) and Domitius Calderinus ( -1477) on the other hand were celebrated Italian scholars and contemporaries of the publisher Sacon. Der Rücken trägt einen handschriftlichen Titel in schwarzer Tinte sowie von Hand gemalte florale Verzierungen. Der Einband ist stärker beschabt und bestoßen. Das Papier ist an einigen Blatt verstärkt und zum Teil gebräunt oder fingerfleckig. Da die Initialen per Hand koloriert wurden, finden sich auf einigen Blatt leichte Farbflecken. Die letzte Lage V (8 Blatt) fehlt. Insgesamt liegt die Inkunabel in einem guten Zustand vor. Vor allem der prächtige Holzschnitt sowie die kunstvoll gestalteten Initialen sind sehr schön erhalten. Beschreibung, Inhalt und weitere Eckdaten: Eine sehr schöne Sammlung der Werke Vergils samt den 5 wichtigsten Kommentaren des Mittelalters von Servius, Landino, Donatus, Calderinus und Mancinelli. Den Anfang des Werkes schmückt ein sehr schöner, teilkolorierter Holzschnitt (16 cm hoch, 19 cm breit). Er zeigt die fünf Kommentatoren Vergils bei der Arbeit in einem prächtigen Saal vor ihren Schreibpulten sitzend. Die Kommentatoren sind in der Rangfolge ihrer damaligen Wichtigkeit abgebildet, so dass Servius zuoberst und Macinelli und Calderini am Fuß der Abbildung sind. Weiterhin verzieren zahlreiche Holzschnittinitialen mit schönen floralen Verzierungen den Text. Diese sind ebenfalls zum Teil koloriert und haben eine Größe von 6 bis 9 Zeilen. Der Text selbst ist sehr kunstvoll auf 62 Zeilen gesetzt, wobei der Kommentar die Worte Vergils umrahmt. Ein edles gestochenes Exlibris schmückt den vorderen Innendeckel.
