Walt Whitman Leaves of Grass First Edition 1855 Start Price USD 70,000.00 Current Price USD 70,000.00 Time Left - Bid Count 0 Buy It Now Price - Reserve Price - Start Time Friday, August 22, 2008 End Time Friday, August 29, 2008 Location New Canaan, CT See more about 'Walt Whitman Leaves of Grass First Edition 1855' Description Walt Whitman Leaves of Grass First Edition 1855   Up for bid is a First Edition of Leaves of Grass Brooklyn 1855.  It has engraved frontispiece and tissue guard, original green cloth, gilt-lettering on cover and spine, blind lettered on back cover, decorated in blind on front and back covers within a triple blind rule.  This is a First Edition; state B of the copyright page B of page IV; state A of the frontispiece; binding B.  This copy has the eight pages of reviews and notices from November tipped in, (the book was issued in July), the spine cloth is splitting along the top half along the front cover edge; minor cloth fraying and soiling; minor foxing and bookplate.  A very good, unsophisticated copy that comes in a custom clamshell box.   Leaves of Grass is regarded by some to be the greatest piece of American poetry.  At times, it seems unplanned and unorganized with little attempt at following a regular pattern.  Many consider his work to be truly a reflection of what an American should be: proud, vocal, strong, comfortable in who he is, honest and friendly - qualities that would appeal to our masses and some beliefs that clearly would not appeal to the masses.   I encourage bidding from all countries on this thin doctrine of personalism and democracy.  Walt believed in the common man.  This particular edition may not draw the common man’s attention, but there are editions compiling 30 additional years of Whitman poetry at the cost of a paperback.  And that adds another dimension to this wonderful capitalist country I live in.  If it sells it will bring me closer to my American dream – an XK140 Jaguar.  A fitting tribute to the American Bard.   Please contact me for shipping costs.
